New MAZDA Iconic SP Concept Debuts

We’re always excited to hear about new Mazda cars here at Paretti Mazda, even if they are concepts that might not make it to the market in the same form. The Mazda Iconic SP Concept recently made its debut, and we’re wondering how it could influence the next generation of Mazda cars and SUVs.

Is It a New MAZDA Miata?

At first glance, the Mazda Iconic SP Concept does look like it might be a new Mazda Miata. It differentiates itself from the classic roadster in a few key ways, though. This concept car is heavier than the Mazda Miata, around 850 pounds heavier, to be more specific. It’s also approximately 10 inches longer and four inches wider. This stylish car is still sporty, but it has a different stance than most of the models you’ve seen come from the Mazda brand.

What Does This Concept Mean Longer-Term?

What’s interesting about the Mazda Iconic SP is what’s under the hood. Although we don’t have the full details yet, we know that an unknown number of electric motors power this model along with a twin-rotor rotary engine. The rotary engine helps charge the battery in the Mazda Iconic SP, expanding its driving range. We might see some similar powertrain setups come to newer Mazda models as the brand electrifies more of its lineup. Even the Mazda Miata is expected to go “green” with some electrified powertrain options.
