The IIHS is calling for safer vehicles and backing their call with stricter testing. Mazda models, such as the 2024 Mazda CX-30, continue to deliver. At Paretti Mazda, we’re taking a closer look at the new standards and the vehicles that have measured up.

What Does the IIHS Do?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is a nonprofit organization actively working to prevent car accidents. Like the NHTSA, it tests and researches vehicles to see how well they keep occupants safe. However, it goes further by evaluating vehicles’ active safety features’ effectiveness in preventing crashes in the first place. This way, it aims to reduce deaths, injuries, and property damage.

What Makes a Vehicle Safe?

The IIHS conducts six crash tests to determine a vehicle’s safety. Then, each car is given Good, Acceptable, Marginal, or Poor ratings. They also look at everything from a vehicle’s headlights to its LATCH system and driver-assist features.

Which Vehicles Are the Safest?

In recent years, the IIHS has increased its standards for vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluation. Vehicles that achieve advanced or superior ratings in both daytime and nighttime tests achieve the highest honor from the IIHS, which is the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. The Mazda winners include:

  • Mazda3
  • Mazda CX-30
  • Mazda CX-50 (for models built after August 2023)
  • Mazda CX-90

What is the IIHS Top Safety Pick Award?

Vehicles that still perform well in the IIHS safety tests and earn at least ‘Good’ ratings across the board will still earn a notable IIHS Top Safety Pick award. They also must have Acceptable or Good headlights on all available trim levels. The Mazda CX-90 PHEV received an IIHS Top Safety Pick award.
