2021 MAZDA CX-5 vs 2021 Toyota RAV4

There are a lot of options for your next ride around Metairie, Harvey, and New Orleans, LA, but if you’re looking for a standout SUV, your search has probably led you to the 2021 Mazda CX-5 and the 2021 Toyota RAV4.

In this comparison, the team at Paretti Mazda will put these two SUVs head to head to see which one will make a better ride for you and your family. If you have any questions along the way, don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of our team.

MAZDA CX-5 Performance

Power Down the Open Road

When choosing your next vehicle, it’s all about performance. A powerful motor can create a more engaging and exciting drive and make you want to spend more time behind the wheel. The 2021 Mazda CX-5 offers two engine options so you can find the blend of power you crave.

A standard Skyactiv®-G 2.5 4-cylinder engine generates up to 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque for a smooth and quick drive. You can also take it up a notch with the Skyactiv®-G 2.5 Turbo 4-cylinder, which produces up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque.

Unfortunately, the 2021 Toyota RAV4 only offers one all-gas powertrain, a 2.5L Dynamic Force 4-cylinder, so you won’t be able to customize your drive. This motor maxes out at 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, so you may notice a difference in the way these two SUVs perform.

A Sleek Ride at Every Mile

To smooth out every mile and ensure a refreshing drive, the Mazda CX-5 also comes standard with Skyactiv-Vehicle Dynamics with G-Vectoring Control Plus. When cornering, this system seamlessly balances vehicle weight and transfers power output to gently usher you around every twist and turn you encounter.

Since this is a Mazda-exclusive feature, you won’t find it on the RAV4 and taking turns may not feel as smooth and sleek.

MAZDA CX-5 Interior

2021 MAZDA CX-5 vs 2021 Toyota RAV4: Interior Features

While a commanding engine makes a car more fun to drive, it’s nothing without refined interior comfort. One of the first specs you’ll want to check out when looking for your new SUV is interior space.

Stretch out with the following cabin measurements of the 2021 Mazda CX-5 and the Toyota RAV4:

MAZDA CX-5

Toyota RAV4

Headroom (front/rear)

39.7 inches/39 inches

37.7 inches/39.5 inches

Legroom (front/rear)

41 inches/39.6 inches

41 inches/37.8 inches

Hip Room (front/rear)

55.2 inches/55.3 inches

54.3 inches/47.7 inches

As you can see, the Mazda CX-5 and the Toyota RAV4 both offer enough front leg space for all drivers to enjoy and ample rear headroom for your passengers, but this is where their similarities end.

Your back-seat passengers will prefer the ride in the Mazda CX-5 with its significantly more legroom and hip room. Even with a car full of kids, there will be enough room to spread out.

Premium Entertainment on the Road

Not only do you need a vehicle with a cozy and refined interior, but you also want to have an engaging drive as well. The Mazda CX-5 provides this with a standard 10.25-inch Mazda Connect™ infotainment system. It’s packed with smartphone integration, like Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay, allowing you to craft a curated listening experience with music, podcasts, and audiobooks.

The RAV4 also comes standard with smartphone integration, but the baseline display is much smaller at only seven inches. While an 8-inch touchscreen is available, it still doesn’t measure up to the Mazda CX-5 and may be harder to view on the ever-changing road.

MAZDA CX-5 Safety

Stay Alert on the Fast-Paced Road

When your little ones are on board, you can never be too safe. It’s simple: When you’re alert, your passengers are better protected.

To help you detect potential frontal collisions sooner, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 and the 2021 Toyota RAV4 both come standard with their model-specific versions of the following Mazda systems:

  • Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection: Warns when a frontal collision seems likely and applies the brakes, if needed, to help avoid impact entirely.
  • Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go: Maintains a set speed and following distance between your SUV and the car ahead, stopping and slowing as traffic flow dictates.
  • Lane Departure Warning System with Lane-keep Assist: Monitors your vehicle’s position between lane markers to alert you when you may be drifting out of your lane and apply gentle steering corrections as needed to keep you on track.

The Mazda CX-5 also comes standard with Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert to act as an extra set of eyes on the open road. It monitors your vehicle’s side blind zones and alerts you to detected vehicles, so you’ll know when it’s safe to merge or change lanes. When backing out of a parking space, it also warns you to approaching cars so you can be on your way with confidence.

While a comparable system is offered in the RAV4, it’s not a baseline amenity. Therefore, if you want this extra protection by your side, you’ll need to choose a higher trim level of the Toyota SUV.

Upgrade Your Protection

Of course, you can never be too safe, so these SUVs have available systems to help keep you and your passengers out of harm’s way. You may find your drive more alert in the Mazda CX-5, though, thanks to the available windshield-projected Active Driving Display and Traffic Sign Recognition System.

These features project essential driving information, such as road signs, onto the windshield in front of you. The RAV4 has a comparable feature to read Do Not Enter, Stop, and speed limit signs, but it doesn’t display them directly within your line of sight, so you’ll have to take your eyes off the ever-changing road to access them.

2021 MAZDA CX-5 vs 2021 Toyota RAV4: Which SUV Is Right for You?

Don’t just take our word for it, though. Stop by Paretti Mazda to schedule a test drive of the Mazda CX-5 and experience this sleek SUV firsthand.
