i-ACTIV AWD® Drivetrain and Fuel Efficiency

There is ultimately not much difference in fuel efficiency when adding the available i-Active AWD®. The i-Active AWD® is an all-wheel drive system made to provide safety when road conditions aren’t ideal.

The system helps give traction when driving on slippery roads by distributing torque across all four wheels. This way, you’ll have better handling when you need it.

All Mazda CX-5 trims can be upgraded to or come standard with the i-Active AWD® with Off-road Traction Assist. Two of the trims, Grand Touring Reserve and Signature, come standard with i-Active AWD®.

The Skyactiv®-G 2.5 engine combined with i-Active AWD® has an EPA-estimated 24 city/30 highway MPG.1 Meanwhile, the Skyactiv®-G 2.5 with Dynamic Pressure Turbo, when combined with i-Active AWD®, is capable of an EPA-estimated 22 city/27 highway MPG.1

How to Improve Your Gas Mileage

Once you’re behind the wheel of your Mazda, you want to keep it in the best shape possible, including increasing its fuel efficiency. Here are some tips to improve your gas mileage:

  • Drive safely: Things like speeding, accelerating quickly, and sudden braking all use more gas.
  • Remove excess weight from inside your vehicle: Avoid having too much extra stuff in your vehicle. Extra weight in your vehicle from unnecessary items means that your vehicle has to use more gas to haul it around.
  • Avoid too much idling: Idling uses gas. If you’re waiting in your car, turn off your vehicle to save gas.
  • Use cruise control: Using cruise control on the highway means you can maintain speeds. Maintaining a constant speed uses less gas than having to accelerate or brake continually.
  • Avoid hauling cargo on your roof: Attaching items or leaving cargo boxes on your roof when you don’t need to increases wind drag on the vehicle. To make up for this additional drag, the engine needs to use more gas.
